My classmates and I (we are third graders) like to talk into the fan in our classroom because we sound like robots. Why does this happen?

I still like to do it.
When the blades spin around, some of your voice goes through and some is reflected back. So it breaks up your voice and makes it sound cool. Try turning off the fan and talk into it while is slows or while it is speeding up or on different speeds, it it has different speeds.

It is caused by the "doppler effect" caused by the rotating blades. As they rotate they compress and de-compress the frequency of your voice. It's like when a vehicle is coming toward you the sound is higher than when it goes away from you. If you think talking to a fan is fun you better watch that your nose does not get cut off.

Sound waves travel by vibrating air molecules. These waves are disturbed by the fan blades.
