I've heard a lot of WAP jokes when I was a little kid. I never knew what it specifically meant. I know it refers to flashy Italians? or Italians just off the boat? And does W.A.P actually stand for something?

and it stands for With.Out. Papers
when Italians migrated from italy in the early 1900's many of them had no papers of identification so the merry English and Irish men already here classified them as WOP's hence the slogan and the bad joke.

WOP=With Out Papers, an outdated immigration slang term for Italians.

During the time period when Italians made up a large portion of the immigrants entering the U.S. through Ellis Island, those who had no papers were given a tag that said "W.O.P" which stood for "With Out Papers", it stuck.

True storey is that W.O.P. stands for With Out Papers. When Italians started immigrating here there were so many that we couldn't keep up, so they started painting WOP on them to pick out those from the crowd of legals.
