I need to get a SUV because I have a baby and carry a lot of things and have a big dog and like to go to the snow. I was looking at the BMW x5 because I have heard it was a very safe car for the baby and that it handles very nicely. What have people experianced with this model? Is it pretty reliable? I have a Mercedes e320 wagon ( 2002) and like the feel/safety of a german car.

Very Good choice. Infinity V-8 all wheel drive SUV is also worth a look. I perfer to be a little closer to the ground. So I drive sedans

BMW X5 is an excellent car. Built like a tank and handles like a sports car. And no iDrive... yet...luckily.

But take note. Since it's built like a tank, the doors are extreamly heavy to open or close. You gotta be the gentle (& strong ) man to open the doors for the lady, the baby and the dog. If your wife has the baby in her hands and try to open the door of a X5... forget it!

The steering is also on a heavier side and ride comfort is not so good for long distance.

I had a 11 car pile up accident on the high way, and only had a few scratches on the X5. Can't say the same of the others cars. Safety is ... like a tank.

But since you like the snow, this is one thing a tank can do and X5 can't. It cannot go off-road. There is no low diff gear box and the X5 is a wimp when taken to the mud and snow. The stupid thing is that it has a automatic hill-decent feature, but can't actually get up the hill in the first place!!!

Also, take note that the new X5 will be coming soon. Not sure what a monster or beauty Chris Bangle gonna make it. So if you really decide on the current X5, hanggle with the salesman for a better deal.

The X5 is an excellent vehicle. It is not a hardcore off-road SUV but a wagon that can handle some bad weather. You're not going to win the Baja 1000 with a X5, but your family will be safe in it.

If you can afford it, opt for the 4.4L V8. The 3.0L is a bit wimpy, but both engines can tow quite a bit.

Now, if you're truly priviliged, look for a 4.6is. That thing hauls!

I currently have a BMW X3 and I used to have an X5. Their handling is excellent. You cannot compare the handling of a BMW to any toher car. I feel very safe in the rain, snow, whatever! I've never had any major problems with my BMW's and they all come with roadside assistance which I've used once and had a very good experience with it. You would never think you are driving an SUV they handle just like a car!

It's a great SUV (or SAV as BMW likes to call it). I had one for 3 years and it was excellent: very reliable, great handling, safe. Go test drive one. Make sure you take your dog. A friend of mine got an X5 and his large dog had a hard time jumping into the back.

i have an X5 and love it.

my former vehicle was a BMW M3 and i am an aggressive driver. although its no M3, it handles more like a 5 series sedan than an SUV and keeps me happy.

i have the sport package with the factory 19" wheels. it doesn't give the ride you're accustomed to in your E320 Touring, but it handles incredibly. if you want a soft ride don't get the sport.

you will love the X5!

p.s. get the 4.4i or better, the 3.0 is for women
