Your steering wheel is popping? Thats odd. If however your front tire/wheel is making a popping sound it your CV joint. It will first manifest it self on corners. You turn and it will make a distinct popping sound. As the CV (constant velocity) joint gets closer and closer to giving up, it will get louder and be heard more often. When it goes out, you car will stop. Your engine will race as much as you put your foot on the gas but your not going any where.
If its a tie rod, you will notice that between about 25 to 30 miles per hour on the low end, your front end will wobble. Your tire will develop a gyroscopic effect at higher speeds of about 45 mile per hour on the high end and the wobble will smooth out. Also you will eventually notice some really odd wear on the tires.
If it really is your stearing wheel you better get that looked at soon. Your going to look mighty funny going down the road 60 miles an hour waving your stearing wheel out the window to get people to move out of your way.

Hi I don't know if there is a sound when the tie rod is wearing but I do know that when it breaks it can be very dangerous because your tire will break away and you could lose control of your car. I know it can be expense to fix but it is not something you want to let go, it will cost you more in the end if it is your tie rod. You should at least stop at Midas or somewhere and get them to verify it. Most garages won't charge to have a look. I had to have two of them replaced on my car and there was know noise it was my mechanic that caught it during a routine check-up on my car and he did tell me it could be dangerous if left.

There can be a knocking sound if the tie-rod is really bad. Your best bet is to put the front end in the air on a lift or jack stands.
Grab the tire on the sides and try to wiggle it back and forth. Side to side movement means either your inner or outer tie-rod is bad.
If you grab the tire on the top and bottom and wiggle it and have play in it you have a bad ball joint.
If you grab it diagonally and you have movement you may have loose or worn bearings.

Usually they don't make a noise unless it is extremely worn. You are more likely to notice slack in the steering wheel or your front tires will start to wear in an unusual way.(like it wears the inside or outside edge of the tire) It really does need to be looked at to be sure. I would suspect that the rack and pinion(if it has one) maybe moving a little or the lower control is. It could also be the sway bar popping.I have seen that before as well.

If you hear a popping noise coming out from under the wheel, you had better keep a close eye on it. The tierod could break anytime.
