I usually have the same predicament. Until recently. If you've ever experienced a loss, you would know that there are no words to heal the pain. There is only time. But, you can tell your friend, or whomever, that the person that died changed or was an influence on your life somehow (if they were) because one of the most important things that greiving loved ones goes through is, that they wish so many more people knew how great this person was. Part of my comfort when my brother died 8 years ago was that we donated his organ & tissue. We received a letter stating that his eyes went to help 2 people see again. To me, that meant that he was still here, seeing the world, and that part of him helped someone even if they didn't know him.

You ask them if there is anything that you can do to help ease the situation. If there is nothing, then only be there as a comfort. Sometimes in these situations, being that person that runs to the airport, grocery store, etc, is the best thing for the moment. Other times its about being a good listener. Lastly, with people coming in and out; its always helpful to help keep the place clean for the family.

the first thing that I would do is to let them know that you are sorry that they lost a loved one. Second I would offer them as much support as they need to get over this and thrid I would ask if there was anything that I can do or that they need to help out.

There really isn't anything to say just let them know you are there for them and support them through the grieving process.
