I would suggest you go to your local library and look at the Poetry Writer's Market book. It will outline publishing companies and what type of poetry they are looking for. Another good source is to check out Writer's Digest magazine; often they have information about publishers listed in it. If you've got a good regional bookstore, go there and check books on poetry writing and the same thing with periodicals. If you happen to be in a town with a college, you might talk to someone in the English Department also about how to get published. Breaking into the business is difficult, but if you don't keep trying, you won't ever make it. I wish you much success in your quest!

Indeed, self publishing is VERY expensive and rather pointless, as it is simply a vanity thing. And forget those so-called "free" online publishers. These are cheesy and again, just appeal to your vanity. Don't waste your time. Anyway, no one really publishes poetry today other than vanity presses, as there is not much call for it. If you are well known in the field (or EXTREMELY talented), you might have a book (chapbook) of poetry published but that is EXTREMELY rare, and only done through very small publishing houses. There is simply not the monetary return for poetry books. And believe me, really GOOD poetry is difficult to write and you need a flair for it. I am not talking about verse or trite poetry, but really good stuff that is unique and shows a knowledge of your craft. I would suggest you turn to another style of writing.

I'm in the same situation. What I used is the magical book of Poet's Market (get the latest edition; this year's edition will be 2007). It has a list of probably hundreds of different publishers, from small chapbooks to online publishers, to large book publishers. They're also categorized into genres and states for your convenience. Poet's Market is the best place to start in my opinion.

The site http://www.iuniverse.com/ is for self publishing with a FEE. The marketing for this site must not be very effective because people keep mentioning in in self promoting answers!

But for free you can go to go to the writers digest website and order yourself a writers market book. It's a great 'yellow pages' of publishers who vary from small press to mainstream publishers.

Also check out the book "The Guide to Literary Agents".
