I am moving across the country (from OH to NC) and I'm going to need to transfer to a new school. I have a low GPA due to entering a major I was not prepared for and not putting the effort in I needed to. I need to get into a school, though. Is my only option community college?

It depends on the GPA as you thought. If it is 2.0 or less, it might be difficult to transfer to anything but a community college. My best advice is to talk to an admissions officer at the college you are thinking about applying for before sending in an applicaiton to see if it is realistic.

first of all OH to NC is not across the country, i have driven that disance in like a day and a half,

why do you need to change schools? even if your parents move you can still stay in school, need to write a letter stating that you are totally on your own so you can keep in-state tution

second what yr or how many units are you transferring with, cuz if you dont have enough they might make you re-apply as if a frehmen, if you have above a 2.3 i would say you can get into some school out there, maybe not in the same major, they might have restrictions but if you do want to get into a good university and you are moving maybe it is a good time/excuse to go to a JC and boost your GPA back up and than transferring, some schools got the transfer program with pretty good schools

Definitely not...honestly, just call the schools that you're interested in and talk to their admissions people. Tell them your info and see where that takes you. Remember that they want students just as much as you want to be in the school (want your money). You still got to get accepted into the school so when explaining your reasons for transfering...just mention the what you wrote above. Good luck.

no, most state universities will take you with over a 2.0. I know a guy who transfered from ASU to SFSU with about a 2.4 and it was all okay. It is only if you try to go to a better school that you'll run into problems.

Many universities (esp state univ.) will take you on a probation status. Meaning that you need to get a 2.0 (or 3.0 or whatever) the next semester to be accepted unconditionally.
