my former mother in law was a hypochondriac. Still is. There were times when out of the blue she would develop an alergic reaction to some simple thing she had been around all her life. I don't mean a case of the hives or something I mean trip to the hospital emergency room stop breating about to die reaction. She believed it so much that it became real. She has been seeing a special shrink for about a decade now. He has pealed back layer after layer of sad sick stuff. As a result she has lost most of her alergies. He pills are about half of what they used to be. Each illness was a symptom of some underlying emotional past trama. We don't speak to each other any more...she has other problems I can't deal with. However the last I heard she was doing much better and was much happier.

My point is your wife has a problem. The sickness is real. Her nose will really run. As a man (woman) thinketh, so is he (she). To every one reading this: by the same token if you think of health and wealth.....need I say more? She has made this real. She needs real help. Not from a bottle of pills. Real help with the real problem. You need a good shrink. A really good shrink.

In the mean time you will have to treat the symptoms of what ever ailment she presents. It can be life threatning. She really can make her self very sick. Get out your phone book and start looking for some help or referals today. This will not get better all by its self.

Her hypochondria maybe due to psychological problems or could be she is genuinely ill . There is an illness called Lupus an immune system disorder that manifests it's self by many illnesses all at the same time.

The great mystery here is whether your wife is really ill or not. Either way you both need go together to see her GP.

Best wishes to you both and I hope that you get the help you need. x

And you have a medical qualification, do you? Or a degree in psychiatry? Even if she is a hypochondriac, this is as mental illness for which she needs help and treatment, not ridicule. Try being more caring and supportive and finding out the real source of the properly qualified medical professionals

Bless your heart - I know what you must be going through. You say she is making herself ill - how? Perhaps you could pinpoint a reason why she is asking for attention in this manner?

One of my dearest friends is a hypochondriac, but only when her husband is deployed. I truly feel that when her husband is not around, she feels security while being around doctors. My husband and I feel very guilty because we have no sympathy for her at all! Her husband knows what is going on, and plans to get out of the military soon, so hopefully her symptoms will end then.

It's so difficult to be properly supportive when you know they are doing it to themselves! Sit down and talk to her, let her know that you are on to her and want to help. I hope you guys can work it all out - God bless!

As a previous person has stated it is a symptom of Anxiety and Depression. The Use of Thought Field Therapy Techniques can be very powerful in helping to sort this out in a very short space of time, without the use of drugs. However please always seek medical advice. If you want to know a bit more about thought field therapy (TFT) go to www.dochsa.co.uk or seek the help from a local practitioner.

Their is not much help for a truly "Hypochondriac". i use to think that I was one until the
Doctor told me, that Robert, you are not as each time I see you something is wrong with you. LOL. That is the difference between someone that is ill an a hypochondriac. We once had a co-worker that stayed out of work for about six months from a spyder bite. Did they fire him? No.?

Your wife has an underlying fear that could be, but is most probably not associated with her health. Her preoccupation with her health is the manifestation of that fear. She needs to see a good therapist to find the root of her fear, most preferably one that can does energy work so that she can hypnotize/meditate, this works alot quicker than conventional therapy.

The best recipe to stop a person from being hypochondriac is to ignore her/him every time he/she starts complaining of any ailment.
