So that anyone can hail one no matter where they are or what the native language....airport is another....hotel yet another!!!

becuase when people invented taxis the country it was in called it taxi
then they phoned up someone in a different country and said we've got this new thing called a taxi

Isn't the German for airport - Flugenhafen (or something quite close!)? So that one shouldn't be in the list I don't think? And hotel is 'pension' in French I think - oh hang on, wait (whilst brain ticks over slowly!) no I think that is the French for B & B! Sorry!

Universal word,

similarly Hotel is as well.

Often spoken by a stranger having come out of a railway station,

"Taxi! Hotel please."

In Scots Gaelic it's a Tacsi. (AFAIR same in Irish & Welsh)
