The August 2006 issue of PCWorld says that to keep keyloggers from using your computer try the free ZoneAlarm firewall (the built in Windows XP firewall can't do that).
Netcraft offers a popular free toolbar that can warn you when you encounter a known phishing site.
Go to www.f-secure.com/weblog (F-Secure) or www.viruslist.com/en/feeds (Kaspersky) or www.sophos.com (Sophos) to keep abreast of teh latest Internet threats.
Get advice from PCWorld.com's Spyware Info Centre but I believe you need to have a subscribtion to get this (find.pcworld.com/53748).
Look for antivirus software that provides rootkit scanning and removal. Kaspersky's and F-Secure's latest applications have it now, others will have it soon.
Other rootkit detectors such as Sysinternals' RootkitRevealer and F-Secures's Blacklight are both free downloads.
And as another user stated there is always Avast.com.
Microsoft also has free betas for Window's users. Actually now I believe it's beta 2. There beta last year was the best overall antivirus according to PCWorld!

incredibly there is not any perfect or best virus scanner each and each of them has their perks and defects. easily i'm sorry yet as quickly as you pc is contaminated your pc would sustain harm and it won't inevitably make it run like new yet WHAT EVER YOU DO do not deploy ANY VIRUS SCANNERS OF the internet in case you pc is your pc is already contaminated setting up some thing off the internet is like establishing your front door to a gaggle of serial killers that could be a huge mistake this would permit greater viruses on your pc making the placement worse hit upon a scanner that suits your desires and has the suggestions what you prefer deploy it onto a transportable disc or bypass purchase the 1st rate version from the keep then positioned it on your pc without the internet and do away with the viruses

For your anti-spyware needs:
Here you are:
Pick and choose at least 2 from the list below. New spywares are created literally hourly, so no single anti-spyware can really detect all malware. Have at least 2 on hand and alternate scanning with each every few days or so. All are free. All can remove as well as detect.
Spybot Search and Destroy:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html
Ewido:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Adaware SE:
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
A-Squared:
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/
Windows Defender (Beta 2):
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Unfortunately, many "paid for" anti-spyware products are in fact either of limited usefulness or downright scams. When in doubt, look at the list of rogue anti-spyware solutions listed here:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
And to protect your computer from ever getting infected with spyware in the first place, you can use these 2 freebies:
SpywareBlaster:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
SiteAdvisor:
http://www.siteadvisor.com/
................................
For your anti-virus needs:
Here is a list of all the major free anti-virus programs:
Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Anti-Vir:
http://www.free-av.com/
AOL AntiVirusShield:
http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?
AVG:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5
BitDefender 8: (on-demand only, no real-time protection)
http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--BitDefender-8-Free-Edition.html
Clamwin: (on-demand only, no real-time protection)
http://www.clamwin.com/
All are fairly mediocre compared to some of the top rated (paid) anti-virus programs such as Kaspersky (KAV) or Eset NOD-32. But you can't beat the price.

I'll say this till I'm blue in the face... The best free antivirus you can get for your PC is AOL's Active Virus Shield (based on Kapersky Labs' Personal Antivirus).

And try SuperAntiSpyWare Free edition too:

Try this. I was given this company by technical support at microsoft, they told me that it is one of the rare few antispyware programs that will pick up the very latest virus, spyware, etc.

The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out. Either of these firewalls are free for personal use and stop unwanted incoming and outgoing traffic. You choose which programs are allowed to access the internet. They are both fairly easy to use and updated regularly.
http://www.zonelabs.com Zone Alarm firewall
http://www.kerio.com Kerio firewall
Shields Up security site, check your firewall works

http://www.mozilla.com/ Firefox web browser
http://www.opera.com/ Opera web browser
Instal both these web browsers, turn off javascript on one and use that browser for vising unknown websites. They don't support Active X so thats one less way for problems to get on your pc.
Winpatrol is a handy utility that tracks cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

You can also download Microsofts free Windows Defender from the official Microsoft site, and the Malicious Software Removal Tool.
