Some told me a long time ago that it relates back to before they were domesticated . . . when dogs were wild animals, and they walked in a circle to tramp down the grass so that they had a nice place to lay. I don't know if it's the truth, but it makes sense to me!

I wondered that a while back and looked up on it and it says because there ancestors the wild dogs would go in circles before they laid down to push down the tall grass in the fields since they lived in the wild where there was tall grass so they could sleep more comfortable so its been passed down from years ago

The same reason you and I fluff our pillows, and bed covers. They are making their bed more comfortable.

They're instinctively "nesting"......they are patting down their bed to make it comfy before they lie down.
