Maybe it comes from pirates and treasure maps where X marks the spot, and X is the treasure and most contestants are crap and don't have the X factor because they are rubbish not treasures, and when they find the singer with the X factor it will be like finding buried treasure because they will make lots of money.

I believe that the "x Factor" is a phrase ppl use wen they know they r luvvin sumat or sum1 but they can't quite put their finger on a reason why.
