X + 3 = 5

Your given numbers are 3 & 5

Your unknow number is X

if you have an equation with some unknowns, as in x, or y, a given number is when they tell you that x, or y, or z = insertnumberhere. You then use that to solve for the other variables. look in the back of your book for a glossary of terms.
