Because she's never really used it, she doesn't understand that there are actually GOOD people out there. She thinks everyone is a pedophile and/or pervert, because she hears things like that on the news. But she doesn't really understand at all.

Sorry dude. Your mom's right. The Internet is the modern version of The Tower of Babel. All of us gathering together in one language up to no good against God. I mean the Internet was originally created by the military in case of nuclear disaster and the biggest ones to make money off it is the porn industry.

Thats not to say its increased knowledge, etc, etc., but we may be smarter, but we still surf for porn at night, lol

The internet is a wonderful tool to research information. Sheltering you from the internet is similar to the believing that you are being protected from all possible dangers. It is true, there are those that would attempt to coerce or persuade truant behavior, but that is true in all forms of communication, not just the internet. I believe early exposure to the aspects of all forms of communication helps prepare a person for what will await when the parent is no longer present. At some point in time, the bird will leave the nest, and the more you can prepare for that day, the better. The parents job is to instill moral standards. Listen to your mother, and try to understand how she is trying to protect you and instill those moral standards. Your job is the hardest - understanding why those moral standards are being enforced. Once you understand why the moral standards are being enforced, you won't need them to be enforced.

There are a lot of good people out here on the internet. It is just like being in your own neighborhood you have to becareful as to what kind of personal information you give out about yourself, have several conversations with that person, requesting several photos to prove to you that it is the person who they claim to be.

If you decide on a phone conversation with this person *67 your number when phoning this person until you feel confortable with giving your number out.

Always meet in a public place, which is a safe environment and tell someone you trust where you will be meeting. Keep contact with this person and let them know how things are going once you have met your party so that person isnt on the edge worrying about your well being.

There are only a few bad apples out there so keep a positive on the whole process and you just might meet the person of your dreams. Keeping a closed mind about the whole thing will only limit the expierence you could have.

Well tell her you would be happy to show her how to use it safely. I took it up six years ago because my kids already knew the ropes. The best way is to use it herself too and then she will know where the dangers are. I supervise all my family on this and yes it can be either a good or a bad thing depends a lot on what you want to get out of it. You sound responsible helping her use it will set her mind at ease.
Hope that helps

That's great. She wants to socialize on the internet huh? What about the facts that she can look up her TV schedule online without buying a newspaper, hell even reading her local news without buying a newspaper. Then there are card games that she can play in like on yahoo, she doesn't need to chat with the people. She can even study up on her health, meds, find new doctors, new technology to help an aging person live independently. There's alot more to the internet aside from people. When it was first created, you couldn't even chat to people online, it was e-mail. There were only pages up with information on it.

Ask her the difference between being able to talk to perverts or paedophiles via telephone and the internet. You're still connected to them through that, it doesnt mean you sit there phoning everyone from here to Japan.

Just explain to her what you use the internet for and that you are smart enough not to give your details away.

well shes right in a sense.. you dont really know a lot of the people you're talking to. it's all about being smart. i know i've come across a lot of perverts over my years on the web, but i have also made a few lasting friends too. its just, when you think something is wrong, thats your queue to back out. do you know how incredibly easy it is for someone over the web to get all of your information? just be careful.

First, the Internet is like having your own personal research library at your finger tips.

Next, tell you mom to ask me anything she likes. If I don't know the answer I will tell her where she can find it herself (safely!)

Have fun but be safe!
