Find a sport to follow. Football, Baseball, Hockey, Basketball, EVEN SOCCER.
Then learn the game's rules.
Then if you can watch a few games on TV, do it. Take into consideration that alot of sports aren't as exciting on TV as they are live. A perfect example is baseball. MUCH MUCH better at the park then on TV.
The better way to do it is just go to a game when possible with a friend who likes the team or with someone who knows the game.
for example. I didn't know crap about soccer. I watched a little World Cup this summer. I saw an add saying there was a professional soccer team in Dallas called FC Dallas. They are an MLS team. Then I found out that going to a professional soccer game costs just $10 - parking included. So I went to one, talked to some other people around me wearing team jerseys, learned more about the game (I finally figured out what 'offsides' in soccer means) and players, cheered along with others and eventually I just kept going to game after game and now I love soccer. It exciting and fun.
I love to choose underdogs to root for. It makes it much more sweeter when you win. With the exception of the New York Yankees, I like only underdog teams. For example, I have liked the St. Louis Rams and Cincinatti Bengals ALL MY LIFE. They have always sucked as NFL teams finishing last in their divisions year after year. Then in 2000 I finally got my moment when the Rams captured their first Super Bowl. Now the Bengals are winning. ITS A GREAT FEELING!!
Watch and listen to ESPN TV and Radio. that helps you understand the game too.
TRY PLAYING THE GAME. It helps to learn the rules as well. Most communities have adult athletic leagues you can play in. Just get involved.
good luck buddy!

Firstly you need to pick a sport and familiarize yourself with the rules. Don't get too wrapped up with the intricacies of the game right away, just be sure you know the basic terminology. If you get stuck buy "Baseball/Football/Basketball etc. For Dummies." After that, pick a team, it usually is better to go by geography, although some teams (Yankees, Cowboys, Red Wings, Lakers, etc. ) have a national following. After that, just watch ESPN and the sport and get comfortable with it. You'll soon know who the greats are

okay first of all, you have to like what your watching, if your watching sports and you think its the most boring thing then being a sports fan isnt for you.
well i love football and tennis, so i watch those sports as often as i can
how i learn about football and tennis is watching tv or being in fantasy leagues like on yahoo! sports
i know who the best players are by reading their stats and looking what they have done
it all depends on the sport

Unless you're talking hockey or rugby the easiest path to sports-awe may involve lobotomy.
Seriously, if you aren't a fan now, you may be more of a player than a spectator.
