any will work ( try to get one that is Plug and Play - all but the very very cheap ones ) ( also try to avoid refurbished ) you can find all-in-ones for less than $ 100 or basic printers for less than $ 50

You can get a printer these days in less than $50, go to your nearest retailer. Just see what s/w is needed to support. Like you said, if its a recent purchase then it must be with windows xp and probably has a usb drive or even parallel port where you can hook up the printer. Just make sure when you are buying the printer, the printer cable is included else you may have to buy that separately.
Good luck

I bought an HP 1610 all-in-one and I have a Dell also. Excellent printer. photo quality prints everytime! And you can buy them for anywhere around $100-$125

Any kind -- they all use USB ports now, and there are drivers for Windows, so they'll work on any computer.

If your mom likes to print photos as well as documents, I'd suggest one of the Canon photo printers -- fantastic photos, no nozzle-clogging problems like a lot of the Epson printers have, and very affordable. Good luck!

Lexmark is a pretty good brand. Any printer is fine (USB plug and play). HP makes a good printer selection too.
