Don't listen to Shaiinfomed. She is a halfwit. Alabama is a great place to live. We moved here from Chicago and have really loved it here. Very livable place, surprisingly good arts scene and restaurants, etc.
As far as real estate goes, are you planning on investing in commercial? Birmingham has unemployment of around 3%, so you are dealing with a very strong, diversified economy. However, expect steady growth as opposed to rapid growth.
With automotive becoming such a strong element of the local economy, I think you should really look at investing in warehouse and distribution centers as opposed to office space. It's not as sexy, but Birmngham continues to grow as a strong distribution center...and will be even more so when the Interstate from Memphis is completed in 2008.
Two big real estate companies in town that really specialize in this...Graham and Company and Eason Graham and Sandner. Graham and Company seems to have the Midas touch of late, and they're always lookng for investors. We had excellent returns on our money.

Oh God why on earth would you want to come here. I moved here and I hate it. The crime rate is through the roof. Especially the murder rate. But if you insist on moving here then you should invest in real estate in Hoover or Homewood. Not here unless you go to the loft district downtown. They are just now building a ton of high end lofts down town and they are going for good money.

As with anywhere its a good idea to watch and study the market for at least 6 months before attempting to buy unless you have lots of experience in buying and selling in other cities or town... What to you would look like a steal could very well be a Big White Elephant loaded with problems. I would talk to agents, bankers and property owners and developers before throwing good money out the window...
