I have an antique bell, found in a church by my grandfather, over in france. It is about 10 inches tall, hand forged, brass and has "Jean Dubois Au Puy" on the bell base (bell base is 2.5 inches tall).

Any other marking/designs? Does your grandfather live within 30 miles of any known churches or along a main transport route during the 1940's ? Jean Dubois is a fairly common name, without which, there is not much to go on.

From the description, the closest estimate would be that the bell is part of a larger assemblage of bells. Possibly nicked off the church by unkowns, not uncommon in world war 2. Brass suggests 18th century as does the province from which it hails.

A very long shot would be anywhere from the cloisters of du Puy, a building of relation to Notre Dame and a seminary. That church is very likely missin the bell and possibly had it replaced.
