Swimming is an involuntary action just as breathing and your heat pumping blood is to a human. There was a program a few years back about sharks. A small sharks brain was removed and it remained swimming for over a week it died of starvation. A bundle of nerves in the lower back of the shark controlled swimming (not enough tissue to qualify as a brain). This show also show how sharks use body magnetism to bite prey at the last second when its mouth is open an eyes blocked. The sharks turn their head at the last second away from the bait and bite the idling engine.

if a fishes memory is no longer than a few seconds, why do my fish go mad at 6 o'clock every night, just before i feed them.

i think the whole 'fish have a 2 second memory' thing was made up to make us feel better about keeping them in a tiny bowl/tank

Fish CAN remember things!! Fish are more intelligent than they appear. In many areas, such as memory, their cognitive powers match or exceed those of 'higher' vertebrates, including non-human primates." Their long-term memories help fish keep track of complex social relationships. Their spatial memory—"equal in all respects to any other vertebrate"—allows them to create cognitive maps that guide them through their watery homes, using cues such as polarized light, sounds, smells, and visual landmarks.
Dr. Phil Gee, a psychologist from the University of Plymouth, says that fish can tell what time of day it is, and he trained fish to collect food by pressing a lever at specific times. He says "fish have a memory span of at least three months," and they "are probably able to adapt to changes in their circumstances, like any other small animals and birds."
"We're now finding that [fish] are very capable of learning and remembering, and possess a range of cognitive skills that would surprise many people." So no,fish do not have to learn to swim over, and over!!!

i have 3 fish, and i can say that they can remember the corner of the tank were i usually feed them and also wen is cleaning day as they go straight to their hide out. the myth that fish does not remember anything more than a few seconds is a load of bull... and swiming comes natural to a fish like walking is to humans.

actualy, its only thought that a fish has a memory of 2 seconds, nobody can actualy prove that whatsoever, what they do have is a inbuilt "system" of how they do things. or Instinct. this alows them to swim, feed, etc.
