the blues began as a way for the slaves to keep their spirits up while working in the fields, first started off as chants of oppression and grew into what u hear today, the bitter arguments between spouses and how much better life has become after martin luther king put forward the civil rights act in 1963 - which infact, if u didnt know, is the basis for most blues music after 1968.

Blues music has a well-defined structure that is either eight or twelve bars long. The chords in 12-bar blues are, for example, four bars of E major, four bars of A major, two of B7th one of E-major and one of B7. Jerry Silverman wrote "How to Play Blues Guitar" if you can get a copy, it will explain in more detail.

Slaves in the American south began singing the songs that would eventually evolve into the blues to comfort/entertain themselves, pass the time, record their history, etc.
