best camera to start with, I want to edit on my laptop, what should I be looking for. And any extra advice would be great.

you need a light weight camcorder, preferably with dv in and out, also a socket to attatch an external mic would be advantageous.
Also go for miniDV as it is good quality and relatively cheap,a fire wire port on the cam and on the computer, image stabilizer and night shot mode are also good. tripods are essential. To begin with try doing your own version of someone elses music video, this will get you used to angles and cutting techniques. Never use the cameras Special effects, it is always best to add effects at the editing stage on your PC, so a camera with minimal onboard FX is ideal, hope that helps:) Cameras are of personal preference try looking at http://www.which.co.uk/index.jsp

I suggest the Cannon XL2 camera
For editing equipment: Final cut pro on Mac (or Adobe premire pro on PC they are close to equilivent) or edit on AVID - those are the best
Filmmaking is not something you do for a hobby. It is hard work and very long days. It takes a lot of money and time. Take it from someone who knows.

You're going to have to invest in top of the line equipment and you have to know someone in film making to be able to keep the work coming in.
