How many brain cells does a teenager lose per day?

I heard that after age 20, u lose 50,000 a day. What about a teen? or a child?

The brain is still developing all the way up through most of the teenage years, so they're actually gaining brain cells (not that they actually USE them, but that's another topic). Once they reach that peak, they can lose some, but I don't know about 50k per day; seems a little excessive. Depends a lot on habits and lifestyle -- there are some studies that indicate that neurons that are not utilized have a greater tendency to senesce and die early; use it or lose it, in other words -- and if they drink, do drugs or Whip-Its, or participate in full-contact sports, the numbers also go up. The actual number of cells contained in a teenager's cranium at any given time is difficult to calculate on any more than a very rough level of estimation, based mostly on volume and assumed cell density, though MRI technology can also give a clue on number of active cells based on activity level.

Personally, I'd like to think we can calculate brain cell loss in the following manner: Assume that anyone older than 30 is over-the-hill and knows nothing. Up until around age 18, teenagers know everything about everything -- just ask them. A general average for a mature human brain (and I'm talking physiologically mature, obviously) has around 10 billion neurons. S0 10 billion neurons divided into 12 years gives us 2.28 million neurons a day.
