maybe i shouldn't be answering this because i'm white, but i've always heard from my black friends that they are ok with just black. it's not condecending if you don't use it that way! i had a girlfriend who said she didn't like being called african-american because she was born here and has never even been to africa!
like i said i'm white, so i don't know for sure what everyone prefers... mine is only experience.

Honey, no one knows. I've posed this question myself. Each person of color is different in their responses. I just go with black to be on the safe side. Some get offended, some don't.
