Well you could take an "image" of the drive using a utility such as norton Ghost, which you will probably have to back that up on to something like an external usb drive.
Or what you can do, which is what i do, is keep all your documents, photo's music etc, all the stuff which you cant replace on a seperate drive or seperate partition to you windows drive (normally C) and then back that up to a DVD or external drive regulary.
If windows goes wrong and you have to reinstall it, its no big deal to format the windows partition, leaving all your music, photo's and documents on the other partition or drive.
External usb drives are quite cheap now.
Hope this helps

You will need another hard drive to store the backup on and a piece of software called Ghost.
This isvery reliable software although there are others. You can get it at the computer store or online. The best way to use it from a floppy.
Good luck. It is an excellent plan you have.

I prefer Acronis True Image, its easy to use, reliable and less than £20 from Amazon.
You burn your image to disc, then if anything goes wrong you just overwrite from the disc image.
Its better to back up off your hard drive, in case your hard drive fails. An external hard drive will take your files, or you can burn them to cd.

there are many online backup services. some free and some not. the paid ones are more reliable and have more features. some of the paid ones will backup your hard drive on a preset schedule automatically.

I like Norton Ghost. It does normal backups and can also restore your entire PC if needed.
