Over the course of 162 games, for a team to win more than 65% of their games, is nearly impossible. The greatest season in baseball history was Seattle, who had a 71.6% winning percentage. But when you play that many games, these factors come into play:
1.) Players get hurt
2.) No team has 5 All-Star starting pitchers
3.) You play the teams in your division 19 times a year (after a few of those times, the teams are bound to know each other pretty well)
4.) Players are tired...some have bad days. If they were perfect every game, every day, you would see guys hitting 1.000 & pitchers have records of 33-0. No one is perfect everyday. All it takes is a pitcher to have a bad day, and their team can loose.
Remember, a Hall of Fame hitter who has a career batting average of .320 (which is awesome), still failed nearly 65% of the time. In order for a hitter to hit .300 (which is good), they get out 7 out of every 10 at-bats.

There is an old baseball saying ... everybody wins 60 games, and everybody loses 60 games. It's what you do with the remaining 42 games that really matters.
Baseball games are usually NOT determined by just one player. Hence, it's more difficult to outright dominate your opponent.
Two factors separate the winners from the losers ... pitching and timely hitting. The best teams make the playoffs, and the hottest win championships.

I believe that it is 90% skill and 10% luck. In a game where you only have to hit the ball 30% of the time (ie. a .300 or better batting average) it proves that the game IS difficult to play, so skill plays an enormous role here. And the 10% luck...look at some of those catches those guys make! As Scooter once said.... "Holy Cow!"
ps... Hey royal_a_h you related to Yogi? That sounds like a Yogisim to me, or maybe Stengel.

there are SOOOOO many good teams. so winning 6/10 games is avery diffucult feat. Think about this... a hitter is called a very good hitter if he gets a hit 3 out of every 10 hits, and getting 4 out of 10 is unthinkable ( batting.400). So if a batter gets out 7 of every 10 times hes considered a very good hitter. Thats because the competition is so great. Its the same with teams vs teams.

if it was luck every team would win/lose 50%, but there are teams that win 100 games and teams that lose 100 games. that is skill

I agree with brianwerner1313. Plus I think so much depends on the one man in a typical baseball game - the pitcher. No matter how good everyone else is, if your pitcher has an off-day, you might as well roll over and play dead.

It's skill, but remember, all teams have pretty good players. It's not like the best teams only play the worst teams.
