If you are a true novice and don't want to spend much time learning how to make a site, I would suggest the current super-popular MySpace. You can quickly get your information up for all your friends to see.

If you are interested in something more, but still fairly simple try GeoCities or Yahoo.

If you are willing to learn HTML I would suggest ATSPACE.COM. You can create a website for FREE up to 50MBs in size. I have two websites through them and the uptime is great. NO ADS, NO BANNERS. You'll need an ftp program to upload your stuff. There's a good free one for personal use called "FTP Explorer". Of course you'll either need to learn HTML or use one of the WYSIWYG programs like FrontPage or DreamWeaver to actually design your site. e-mail me if you need some help...

If you want your own domain and have it hosted, I suggest ReadyHosting. You get 1GB of space unlimted e-mail accounts, FTP access and domain name registration all for $99 a year.

Web hosting site (FREE):
http://www.atspace.com
Web hosting site (COST):
http://www.readyhosting.com
FTP Explorer site:
http://www.ftpx.com

A couple of my websites:
Pioneer Baseball Website (ReadyHosting - Cost)
http://www.pioneerbaseball.org
My Son's Travel Team's Website (ATSpace.com - FREE)
http://tricountytitans.atspace
Family Website (ATSpace.com - FREE)

This is not an easy answer. Certainly myspace or Yahoo 360 are nice easy ways to create a web space. But I suspect you want something more.

First, you need to learn HTML. There are many good books about HTML. But an easier way is to use a program such as Dreamweaver that uses drag/drop objects to assist in creating web pages. If you can use PowerPoint, you can use Dreamweaver. You still should learn the ins/outs of HTML, but Dreamweaver can get your page up fast.

Second, you need a domain name. This is the name that we are a familiar (www.yahoo.com). Go to Network Solutions or similar site to explore domain name availability. It cost something like $35 a year to reserve a domain.

Third, you need a host. A host is the computer that serves up your page to requesters. There are sites such as Yahoo/Geocities who will host your pages for free, but there are advertisements plastered all around.

Ad - free hosting costs start at $10 a month.

These are three general steps you need to take to get on the web.

First of all you need to: (in the order of priority)

1. Learn some basic HTML coding.
2. Get a web design software like Dreamweaver or Frontpage
3. FInd a place to host your site (Geocities, Angelfire, Dreamhost)

It depends on what you want your site to do, I run a site for a gaming clan; www.dealersofdestruction.org. I used PHP to build this site, which I really like compared to HTML. There is less maintenance and easier to manage/change your stuff.
