As a Mexican I don't like the fact that I'm being called a Hispanic, I'm not Hispanic I'm Mexican, I know there are so much other Latin Countries that it can be and get confusing but than why aren't we called Latin Americans? Like Asians are Asian Americans and Blacks are African American. I'm fine with being called that, but I do find being called Hispanic offending.

I didn't know that being called hispanic could be taken as offensive to many 'hispanic' people. Sorry but I don't any other way of describing you. I mean African Americans, don't all come form direct African decent, There a lots of different asian nationalities. I think the reasoning for this is because they look at your continent of decent. I went to school which was half black, half hispanic, but no one had a problem being called hispanic. If I spoke to them individually they could explain what their origin was, but don't we all have to do that in America. I mean i can get pissed about being called African American, because my family tree has German, African, Native Indian, etc. No one really says hispanic to a person they know, because they know your exact parentage. But as far as applications , doctors record, public records and things like that. It would have to be a million miles long to put every different race, creed, color, and nationality on the form. So a continental breakdown is another way of doing it.

how the devil am I suppose to know if your hispanic or not?

I could call you puerto rican, dominican, or whatever but then you would yell my head off in English or curse me out in Spanish.

It's like asking an asian person if they are chinese or not, I dont need to know that and I could be offending the person, so why risk it? Better to just call them asian.

unless you want to walk around with a "hello Im Mexican" sticker then expect awakward hispanic / what are you questions. However, let your friends know how you really feel, strangers wont care, but your friends should.

What if we called you Hispanic American would that change your opinion, do you know what hispanic means?

And no, as a Mexican it doesn't offend me, just like calling white people caucasian shouldn't offend them, all it is is a broad generalization.

I don't. I'm not offended in the least. I preffer it, not only is it politically correct, but that way no one ever calls me mexican, puerto rican, or anything else that might offed me, that is not my culture.
Just a side note:
When someone calls you 'hispanic' it's meant with respect, since many who do not know you do not know your origins, and do not want to assume anything.
