You have two linearly independent solutions and two unknowns...the situation is solvable.

I would suggest doing the following....
-solve the bottom equation for either x or y
-plug the value you just solved into the top equation in order to make an equation of only one varaiable.
-Solve the new top equation for the variable
-plug this value back into either equation and solve for the second variable.

Solve the first equation for one of the variables. For instance, x = y + 6.

Plug that into equation 2: (y+6)y = 4.

That simplifies to y² + 6y - 4 = 0. That's not factorable, so you'll either need to complete the square or use the quadratic formula.

Either way, you'll get two possible values for y. Plug each of them into one of your starting equations to get a corresponding value for x.

Hope that helps!

solve one euqation for y, and then plug that into the next equation,

you can do y=4/x, then plug that into x-y=6 and get x-4/x=6, then solve for x, the plug back into the first equation and solve for y.

x=6-y from eq#1 then we get (6-y)y=4 then solve it
or x=4/y from eq#2 then x=4/y then we get 4/y - y =6 and solve it

x-y=6 ---1
xy=4 -----2
y=4/x from 2
substituting in 1 we have
x-4/x=4
x^2-4x-4=0
x=[4+-sqrt(16+16)]/2
x=2+-sqrt(4+4)
x=2+-2sqrt2
x=2(1+-sqrt2)
y=4/x=2/(1+-sqrt2)

If you cannot do that, you better give up maths and study the holy scriptures.
