Tide HE is made for certain washing machines which have a built in heater or heat booster and high temperature wash cycle. Most regular washing machines dont have this. If you have a machine with this cycle, your owners manual will specify the types of detergent that work best with it.

We use Tide HE and it does clean better than regular Tide in the high temperature cycle.

This website of the University of Missouri says you CAN use regular detergent. But you have to do certain other thigns to make sure the clothes get clean.

They say use a lot less detergent. And you have to pre-treat any spots and stains, or they won't come out. You have to sort your colors more strictly, and do small loads for better results.

They say you should do this only if HE isn't available where you live.
