Is that based on per capida? It can't be based on how well armed we are, because Switzerland is more heavily armed per capida. The left teaches entitlement!

It is because of two factors first our legal system is not in anyway like say Iraq If you get caught stealing then they will cut off your hand. see here in the stats we slap the hand and tell the person do not do that again. The second thing is we have so many people in this country the population is flat out staggering compared to any other. Also lets take a look at Chili the country if your daughter or you grand daughter is caught prostitution then all the female within the family are take to a camp to work off the debt to society.

Land of the free allows people more freedom to chose how to live their lives. That attracts a lot of people to this country making us one of the world's most populated countries. As such with limitless freedom and more access to resources than people anywhere else, the opportunity to do wrong and hence be punished for it increases. The alternative is state control to ensure that few people do go to jail the result of that is less freedom than we are used to.

More money and time means more opportunity to do drugs, develop a drinking problem, engage in ilicit affairs etc. Look at pro-sports players.

The US actually attempts to hold individuals accountable for their actions. With freedom comes responsibility, and with responsibility comes consequence. If you do not want to be imprisoned, do not break the law. If you don't like the law, feel free to attempt change through a peaceful democratic process, or leave.

Many countries punish people more severely for lesser crimes, so that they do not want to commit prison worthy crimes (such as cutting off a hand for stealing) Many countries prisons are hell holes where people are not given beds, television or family visits. Also, some countries prisoners are killed or disappear before they get to prison.

They tend to abuse those freedoms. Freedom does not give a man the right to rape, kill or pillage. Freedom does not give a woman the right to cut a fetus from another and kill the remaining children. Along with freedom goes responsibility to others. When you refuse to accept this responsibility you must have action taken against you.

HAAAAAA HAAAAA HAAAAA LMAO!!!!

Because they were free until they went and did whatever stupid thing they did to get arrested and put in prison. We have the freedom to live and pursue happiness as long as within reason of the law system.. I hope my blah blah blah made sense.

Because we have to pay for our crimes. Where other countries don't have the same system of laws that we do. I am not saying it is a good thing, I am just saying that is one reason why.

So many stupid laws against victimless crimes. If you decriminalized drug use, you empty many prisons.

That's right Masterwooten, blame it on foreigners.

Zulu, the question was not about China, and the figures are per-capita. China has a much bigger population.
