I am Italian… I love my culture, the food, & I go every year to visit my family and in-laws, but I’m so tired of people always stereo typing Italians as mafioso, spaghetti eating loan-sharks… why is that? People have no clue of what a true Italian is… does anyone feel like this?

i feel the exact same way. i am from india and everyone thinks that indians come from dusty roads, with thin old women carrying baskets of wheat, children running around naked because they have no money...but that's not the case. some people, believe it or not ask me "are there any cars in india?" i just get so aggravated. YES there are cars in india. India's economy is alomost second best to america's. we have malls, clubs, banks, mansions, movie stars, tvs, surround sound, you name it....everything. yes there are ppl who work in the farm fields, but doesn't every country have that? some ppl are just ignorant. they only bother to understand what they see in the media, which is NEVER always true.
each and every culture has something that ppl don't know about. hopefully it's just time untill ppl start to learn.

I spent much time in italy when I was in the navy...way back when...like 66,67,68... I found that when I got away from the tourist traps... not unique to italy... I was teated very well... I would get on a bus in Genoa and ride till I got kicked off... I would not know where I was and could not speak enough italian to make sense. But in small town Itlay I got the royal treatment... invited in for meals... taken on tours... free drinks every where... GOOD FOLKS... always fed me to bursting... I will say that I did run into some of the mafioso on Sicilia south of Palermo... I was invited to a big family gathering... lots of food and wine and music... and because I missed the bus I was given a ride in a very fancy car back to Palermo... when I was dropped off the people in the shop I went into gave me very good treatment... I was told I did not have to pay... I asked Why and they said the owner of that car took care of it... I asked some questions and quickly realized that I had put my security clearence in jepordy by that association.... I reported my encounter to my superiors and was told not to go there again... I never had the chance as that was the last time I visited Sicilia... But even that incounter was most friendly and a good memory.
