I was extremely shy…so shy that even being friends with a girl is pretty impossible. That isn’t to say that I didn’t fancy one or two of them. If a girl wanted to know me, she would have to make the first, second, third, and fourth moves. They had to be subtle moves, or I might get scared. After all of that work, if she considered me a boyfriend, I was too shy to hold hands…don’t even think about kissing.
Basically I was a useless boyfriend to three or four girls.
Then, one day, I saw a girl. No…I saw a vision of everything that is beautiful in the world. I was too shy to do anything about it…but I looked for opportunities to be around her. We spoke in passing…but that wasn’t enough. I started going to dances, just in case she was there. If I saw her, I would go join her group of dancing admirers, but I never asked her to dance alone with me.
On my 24th birthday, some friends threw a surprise party for me and invited some girls…she was one of them. That night I was brave, because I knew that in two weeks I was leaving for the Dominican Republic to work as a missionary for two years. I talked to her a lot. I even asked her if she would go see a movie with me…my last one before leaving the country.
Somewhere in those two weeks we kissed…we kissed a lot. Then, for two years we wrote letters. Time and distance takes the pressure off of a guy…even one as shy as I was. Doing the work that I did changed that shyness thing as well…I had to talk to people in a different language, find their needs, and help them to meet those needs.
When I came home I was a different man: confident, multi-lingual, and ready to admit that openly that I loved a woman. She moved me back, so we got married. Ten years later she is surprised to hear that I was ever shy.
I guess the point is, when she means enough…I mean means so much to a guy that he no longer thinks of himself…then the shyness is gone. As frightening as it may seem to talk to that girl that he wants to be with, it is even more terrifying to not ever speak with her; and risk never knowing if she could love him as much as he loves her.

i'm not a shy guy but i was reading through the answers and i really liked madog's answer. after looking at all these answers, i'd conclude that most of them would be too scared to do anything and would just remain firiends.

I am the classic shy guy, and I would do very little about it. Just ignore it, and go on being friends as best as possible.

I'd write her a letter, and at the end I'd write PS-I Love You!

Wait and see, if you can't wait, ask questions which will lead you you to an answer then take it from there.

maybe, asks her friends is she is single/if she ever talks about you, think about asking them to the cinema, it could be worth the risk of them turning you down, if you really cared about them.
if they were to turn you down i'd have them agree to remain friends, if i knew they were seeing someone i'd keep my distance.
