I have booked my ticket but having second thoughts. I will be staying at a friend's house and it is rare that four of us will be together (two of them works in USA).
The main concern is $$ because I have not worked for six months and is living off my savings. Thus, I have no idea if I should spend the $$ at all. Any good advice? Be nice, please.

My advice is SAVE THE MONEY 4 RAINY DAYS.....unless u hve been offered a job....if not save it...i'm sure ur friendz will understand....cos visits 2 Taiwan issn't cheap...

Go to taipei. It is good that you have a place to stay since a nice hotel will cost $150/night.
Taipei is a very interseting city and a great introduction if you have never been to asia before - it is very "asian" but has western influences. Have your friend show you other places outside the city too. Check out all of the temples, eat lots of great food and buy cheap knockoffs at the night markets... go party and drink lots of local brew. Have fun!!!!
