I think that everybody has missed the point. Why does everybody admire villains so...? In my opinion, the 'best' villain was Gollum. In his ruined condition, you can really see what being evil and selfish has done to him. And you can see that, without evil turning on itself (in the sense of the selfishness of villains competing amongst themselves for what they want) Sauron would have won in the end. Remember, much as we like him-- Frodo gave in to the temptation of the Ring.... He would have been just as bad as Sauron eventually, if Golum hadn't bitten it off of him. We ALL have the potential to be a villain. It's a warning to each one of us.

The Joker, he's not as crazy as he wants you to think. That's why he's brilliant. He's the reason why children are scared of clowns. Read the Killing Joke.
Lex Luthor is also good. Lex in the comics, mind you, not the movies. Evil billionaire, manufactures weapons and has money in energy, bent on world domination. Sounds like Dick Cheney, huh?
