why are you at the mercy of your children? please, please, and any other mothers reading this....for the betterment of society, do NOT bow down to your children. if you don't want them listening to it, then they don't listen to it. perhaps you have this problem with them disobeying because you fold. they need structure. they need discipline. they need limits. for crying out loud...your house shouldn't be a popularity contest. you are the parent. you are supposed to set the standard. that's the whole point.
and omg...by denying your child the permission to listen to a certain type of music, you aren't stifling their personality or creativity. they aren't going to turn out to be less of their potential as a person because you did this. parents are allowed to say no to their children even if it's considered an artform.
and i'm sick of hearing about parents skimping on their duties because it's too hard or too much work or the kids will do it anyway so what's the point....what is the point of having parents if we're going to let kids raise themselves?

I know I can not stop my kids listening to certain types of music BUT what I do insist is that if I am driving I do not have the obscene lyrics playing, with the cds that they have made them selves they will skip the ones that they KNOW I hate with a passion and just accept it, when I spoke to them about certain words / attitudes used within the videos and songs they both said [one boy one girl] that they where well aware of the pros and cons of the music and what it portrayed but as neither of the would ever think about treating someone in that way or allow themselves to be treated in that way it was a moot point..........IF they can not distinguish between fact and fiction within a song then I have more deeper things to worry about
BUT to go back to your question try what I did with the music in the car oh and I DO get a turn of having what I want on the cd / radio plus all music has to be kept down to a dull roar in their rooms.................banning it totally will only make it more wanted,

I don't think that they will stop listening just because you start to.
If your children are nice respectful people I wouldn't worry too much about it. Most people I know may know all the lyrics to a song but don't take it too serious really.
I suppose problems could arise if your children have issues that they believe are similar to these lyrics, and such issues may not be resolved. I don't know how old your children are but bear in mind that a lot of teenagers are quite dramatic so if they do have unresolved issues it could seem to you to be something small and you may be able to help.
Just one more thing......I am 29 and i listen to a huge range of music including eminem, and 50 Cent.

No way should you start listening if you don't like it, it seems the more we tell our children we don't like something it really does not matter to them, they all want to do their own thing, so maybe if you just don't say anything, they know you don't like it, make they close the door or something, and hope down the road their music will change, That could happen you know, my kids went thru a lot of different stage of music, clothes, etc. they all turned out OK -Good Luck!!

You can let them know the consequences of the lifestyle glorified by this kind of music that you will end up in jail or dead because drugs and violence are not cool period, but don't stop them from listening to music just because you find something wrong with it. I personally don't care for a lot of rap music because it objectifies women in a negative view and is very mysogynistic in it's wording towards females.

I was like that. I grew up on country and oldies. And I hit my teenage years, and all my friends were listening to the rap, and hip hop. When i got pregnant with my daughter. It changed. Its just lyrics. I know that it makes no sense sometimes, and it has bad words in it. But if you make a condition that they have to get the edited version, it makes it a little bit better.
BTW- My mom tried that on me. And I laughed at her and called her crazy. Reverse physiology didn't work on me. But everyone loved it when we pulled into school blaring the radio. Everyone thought she was the coolest mom from then on. Let me tell you that music with my mom was very short lived.

Is it a bias against all rap or just certain rap? Depending on how old you kids are you can find cd of age appropriate music of types. You could very easily get them turned on to the specific artists you want them to hear if you get on it right away and keep listening to it yourself. They will hopefully follow your lead.

Explain to them that any Rap album made after 1995, for the most part, sucks...and that in an effort to ensure that they're not looked at as people with bad taste, introduce them to some good music.

You can't stop what they listen to when they are away from you, but you can certainly stop what they listen to in the car or at home. You are the parent, just put your foot down and don't allow rap music in the house or car!
