Funny you should ask... I'm originally from southwest Michigan and moved to Seattle, Washington three years ago. I love it here. Big differences between the two states are:

~ Climate is milder in Washington. It's really, really cold & snowy in Michigan in the winter and really, really hot & humid in the summer.

~ The politics are more liberal in Washington. If you are a Republican, you'd probably fit in better in Michigan or on the east side of Washington.

~ The scenery in Washington is much more beautiful than in Michigan. Mountains, ocean, Puget Sound, Mount Rainier & Baker, etc.

~ Taxes...Income tax in Michigan is roughly 4.5%, there is no income tax in Washington. Washington's sales tax is a little higher, but you only pay on what you buy, not on what you earn!

~ Education is better in Washington, particularly here in Seattle.

~ People are more intelligent, more fit and more earth-friendly in Washington. In Michigan, I lived amongst a lot of "white trash", fat hillbillies who would rather burn their trash or store it, then recycle it. Not to say there aren't those types everywhere...

I would choose Washington over Michigan in a heartbeat, over and over again!

Michigan is my choice.

I used to live in San Francisco, CA and Seattle, WA, but thankfully live in west Michigan now. There is no comparison. Sure, Washington has mountains, but those mountains are VOLCANOES. Disaster is just waiting to happen. The eruption of Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, or one of the other volcanoes will have devastating effects on the populated communities of Washington.

Besides the mountains, the landscape is boring. It lacks diversity. The beaches are horrible, rocky, places.

In Michigan, the beaches along Lake Michigan are superb, sandy beaches. I enjoy going up to Silver Lake or Sleeping Bear Dunes and exploring the vast dune formations. Or, many of the wonderful, quaint towns along the shoreline. I've also visited Tahquamenon Falls, the Porcupine Mountains, and Picture Rocks, all of which are wonderful.

I have been to both. I would prefer to live on the West coast, so my answer would be Washington. However, if you chose to move to Eastern Washington you will find the weather there allot like middle Michigan, very very hot in the summers and damn cold in the winters. The weather on the west side of Washington is very mild, we get hot temps like 80's in the summer down to a few days around zero in the winter. Very pleasant weather where you can go without a snowmobile suit or parka during the winter months,, unlike that in Michigan.
Washington is best....no brainer for me!

I'd go with Michigan. I lived in Seattle and couldn't afford to live there. The cost of living is much lower in Michigan. Overall, the United States cost of living index is 100. Seattle is 119.8. Grand Rapids is 89.7. Seattle is 34% higher than Grand Rapids!

Housing is even worse. The United States cost of living index for housing is 100. Seattle is 148.8. Grand Rapids is 66.7. Seattle is 123% higher than Grand Rapids! It is more than twice as high!

Michigan.

Michigan is wonderful. It has 3,300 miles of Great Lakes shoreline. 11,000 inland lakes. The oldest mountains in North America. Thousands of beaches. Hundreds of islands. Thousands of acres of sand dunes. Millions of acres of forests. Hundreds of waterfalls.

4,000,000 more people live in Michigan versus Washington for good reason.

Well, both of them are beautiful states, in my opinion you should flip a coin! Whichever you decide, Seattle and Detroit are the best cities :)
