If you have a bottle of water in the car, and it is very hot outside, like 30 degrees Celsius. Inside the car temperature is more than that, and so is the water temperature in a bottle.When you drink the water feels hot, so while driving (at safe speed, that is max 120 km/h), you keep the botle outside the car, in order to lower it's temperature.
Me and my husband argued about water's temperature. He said that the temp will fall under environment's temperature and I said it won't because the "outside" counts as a big termostat. We finally put a bet an decided to ask around.

Aha!! Thats a googly.

Assuming that your holding a plastic bottle outside the car which is dry on the outside, the temperature would either be the same as the environment or higher. It would never drop lower.

But then comes the question of the windchill factor. Which is the reason you feel cooler when a wind is blowing. And thats attributed to higher evaporation. So if you put a damp cloth around the bottle, or if the bottle is wet and you hold it outside, it may well cause the water inside to cool to less than the ambient temperature. The dryer and hotter the climate, the more cool the water will become.

So that lays rest to the family feud ;)

The laws of thermodynamics require that the water bottle and its contents eventually (after a really long time) reach the same temperature as the surroundings. If the temperature of the air outside the car is less than that inside, the water temp will drop. If the car is moving, there may be a slight difference due to air motion around the bottle (flriction and compression), but this will be insignificant (unless the bottle is wet on the outside).

The water will change its state in order to assimilate to its ambient temperature. This is why a hot drink will cool in cold weather and a cold drink will heat in warm weather. The liquid will attempt to become the same temperature as its surroundings, but you must consider that certain containers, materials, and colors absorb more or less heat than others which is why a black asphalt street will gather greater heat than a gray cement sidewalk.

Another factor of your question would be that if you are driving with the water outside of the car, the wind will change the temperature by cooling it down at a different rate; however it wont cool it below the ambient temperature. If you take a look at the laws of thermodynamics you should be able to understand how your liquid will behave under temperature pressure and fluid properties.

The water bottle will cool down until the temperature approaches that of the environmental temperature. It will never reach the temperature, just become infinitely close to it. The water will not cool past the environmental temperature. Also, whether you are driving the car or not does not matter. The temperature after a long period of time will be the same.

In asserting the water's temperature will drop below the "environment's" temperature, was the premise that wind-chill was at play? If so, read explanation below.

It is often mistakenly believed that the wind-chill effect can bring an objects temperature below the temperature of the air that is blowing across the object. This is NOT the case. The wind-chill effect only increases the rate at which energy (heat) is removed from an object as compared with static air. The object, in this case the water in the bottle, will ultimately converge to the air temperature that is blowing across it.

i think that with water, the evaporation and condensation will cause it to lose more energy, so it may become cooler than the actual outside temperature.
