Buy a tire that's got a different composition, and watch your driving habits. I ride an average of 200 miles a week, and have had the same tire on the bike for over 6k miles, and it still looks new. If you're wearing out the rear, and not the front, then look in the mirror to see why.

If you ride a performance bike you expect to wear out tyres. If you want exceptional mileage or are worried about costs get something smaller and lighter.
If tread depth was increased handling would suffer as the tread will flex more
I used to consider 1,800 miles reasonable, Now I go slower I get around 4,000 miles. It all depends on your riding style

Touring tires will last about 10,000 miles. Because motorcycle tires flex and the bikes turn by leaning it is impossible to get the mileage enjoyed by car tires. I get about 10,000 miles on average for my back tires and 20,000 for front tires. I average over 20,000 miles a year so that is about 3 tires or roughly $500 a year.

You're using the wrong tire and probably the wrong pressure. I get no less than 14K out of a rear on a Valkyrie. The OEM tire got less that half that.

The "contact patch" that the tire makes with the road would flex. Your bike would do the wiggle-wobble.

It's how you ride.
I have gotten almost 10K out of made in Taiwan tires that only last 6K on other people's rides.(Cheng Shin tire)
Soft tires, cheap price -------------- under $100 a set.
