Sounds like you want to be looking for courses in Product Design. Check out http://www.ucreative.ac.uk/ - they have a variety of design courses and a number of campuses in your area. Good luck!

Well there are technical design courses to take at many levels. It depends on how old you are really. Are you taking GCSEs or A Levels at the moment? Your school may offer them, which is a good base.

Get brochures from local Further Education colleges and see what they offer. There are lots of NDs and HNDs along those lines.

If you're looking at becoming an architect though, you'll have to train for about 7 years and I think you need Maths and Science A Levels to get onto the degree programmes.

Furniture and product designers tend to be from more arty backgrounds.

Hope you find something!

You have to be familar with culture and trends specific to the products you design and be able to sell the merits of your designs. An education will not prove it. Employment will not prove it. A record of success will. So design something easy and unique, like an unusual postal box or something and stick it in the ground take pictures, do more designs, make a portfolio and go to a company clearly lacking in design, show then your portfolio and make a deal with them. Keep that up. After about 100 polite negatives, you will hit onto something.
