Thinking of taking on an 18month contract ( Samsung E900) on Orange. The provider is offering 500 texts & 500 anytime minutes per month for £11.67 per month. The way they arrive at this is 18 x £35 payments with cashback payments in months 4, 8 , 12, 15 &18 of £85 each. This sounds good to me, but am I missing the big con somewhere?

The answer is Yes and No, whilst there are reputable dealers who will honour the agreement, from a legal point of view, this offer is purely between you and the dealer, it is not the repsonsibilty of Orange if they fail to give the money back (look at http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/mirrorinvestigates) and search for Mobiles 4 Free. So ultimately it's up to you. However, deal direct with Orange, and although it would cost £35 per month, you could have either 500mins anytime any network and unlimited texts, or 500mins anytime any network, 200texts and unlimited mins to landline phones.

Nope - that sounds like a very good deal. It is an opening deal that is hoping to get you dependent on your number and the renewal contract won't be anywhere near as attractive. Go for it!

I took a one year contract out but what I wasn't told and stupidly didn't realise that if you don't tell them your terminating the contract before the year is up they just keep on charging you. I ended up paying another two months before I got rid of it.

It is not a con. You have to remember though to claim your cashback within the timescale outlined in your contract .
