There is no scandisk program for XP.
Click the Start button and go into the Programs|Accessories|System Tools menu to find the defrag program.
The stock XP disk defragmenter is slow and doesn't fully defragment hard drives, so I recommend getting a commercial one, like Perfect Disk. In XP, system files cannot be moved or written to (unlike Win9x), so the commercial defragmenter allows you to do an offline and online defragmentation. Offline defragmentation means that the defragger can defragment the system files at boot time. Then you do an online defragmentation when you're running Windows. You don't have to do the offline defragmentation too often. The stock XP defragger doesn't do offline defragging.

Instead of scandisk, you use a command-line program called chkdsk. Open a console window by clicking Start and select 'Run...'
Then type in cmd.exe followed by the Enter key.
In the console window, type chkdsk . Windows will check the specified drive.
If you want Windows to fix the specified drive, you use the /f parameter. Remember that Windows cannot write or move system files while it is running, so by using the /f parameter, you can tell Windows to check the drive and fix any errors on the next reboot. Type chkdsk /? for more chkdsk parameters.
You'll also might want to look at the chkntfs command-line program too. Type chkntfs /? for help on that program.

To run checkdisk, just hold down the F8 key while the computer is starting up. This will fix any problems with your hard drive. For Defrag, go to Start Menu---All Programs---Accessories---and System Tools. There you will see Disk Defragmenter. You can also run Disk Cleanup from here to remove any temporary files that are no longer needed.

Use the above answers but beware defrag won't work if you have less than 10 GB of space. If that happens start deleting unwanted programs or video downloads.Video takes up more space on your hard drive than anything else.

Double left-click on 'My Computer' icon, right-click on drive you wish to Defragment (eg 'Drive C') left-click on 'Properties' and select 'Tools'. Thats it. Good luck.
