I agree that people there should get a job and pull themselves up by the bootstraps. But we're still Americans man, we can send 49 billion to africa to ease the suffering of aids. we send billions to the middle east, israel and south america too. All Im saying is we should take care of our own before spluring on a fricken stadium.
Sometimes people need help. not a hand out, but a hand UP! You're telling me the greatest, richest country in the world cant help out in LA?
170 million for a stadium? yeah let the children starve. not ONE of them is the son of a US marine or soldier or sailor in IRAQ right now, nor Afghanistan! not a single ONE!
total BS!

yup, i guess tourism is a viable method of bringing tourists back, though it didnt work too well with mardi gras. i dont know how well it will work with football.
you've all got some good points, it still just seems odd to spend so much on frivilous(spelling?) stuff like the superdome. all those contractors rebuilding it were most likely from out of state too. not totally sure about that but its a good bet anyhow.

Tough question - I think this a very complex issue. I too am concerned with the welfare of our fellow human beings, however, how many FEMA trailers and happy meals are you going to really get out of $170 dollars? And then once you've spent it, where do you get your resources from? It's like holding up a damn with sand bags - it's just a temporary fix.
By spending money on restoring a major revenue generating venue, perhaps the hope is that jobs will be created - construction, vending, merchandising - not to mention indirect businesses who might benefit - restaurants, bars, retailers, etc.
Besides the revenue and jobs created, sports and entertainment are major morale boosters.
I agree there needs to be significant money spent on people's immediate health and safety needs, but in the entire scheme of things, money spent on the economy may be money well spent too.
Cheers!

Well, let's see. Where did that $170 million go? Did it go to pay some investor off, or did it go into materials and labor to rebuild the place? Did it not go to provide jobs for people who might otherwise be out of work? Will it not bring tourism back to New Orleans, by bringing fans back to the area, where they might not have come?
What's going to bring New Orleans back, money thrown around, or jobs? New Orleans is a city that thrived on tourism, and its road to recovery is through tourism. To do that, you need to have a reason to bring visitors back, and one of the ways is through the Saints.

I think fixing the Superdome was well spent because I will bring people in to the city which will get busisness going and get more people working and moving back to the city. it may seem wrong at first but will help in the long run.

Unless New Orleans is brought back to life financially those people may get homes but they will never get jobs or New Orleans as we knew will be gone. Off the face of the map.

I think fixing the superdome was a really bad thing and it makes me mad because my aunt was a victim of Huricane Katrina. Theres to many people homeless out there for them to be spending money on the Superdome.

Good point, while they shut the Superdome back down, why don't they stop pouring money into all the other things that bring revenue and jobs and tourism into the area as well. Good thinking.

I really can't say that I am surprised. The entire problem could have been avoided had the "powers that be" (not the president) taken precautions to protect their city. Shows you where their hearts really are. Party, Party, Party!

Welcome to our world, friend. Did you see the yahoo story about the prosthetic dolphin's tail that will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars? All while thousands of Africans starve everyday? America and Europe are so absorbed in themselves that they create "entertainment" like this to shift their eyes from the real problems. Ignorance is bliss, after all, right?

I don't know what else we could expect from people who built their city below sea level on the edge of the ocean. Somehow I doubt there are a lot of scholars or philosophers in that crowd.

i totally agree, look at all the "superstar celebrities" making 40 million + a year (Oprah, Michael Jackson, etc.), and there is so much hunger and poverty in this world!
