I'm not sure that any body really knows, they were an Indo- European people that is all I know and I believe they gave the Greeks their language. Not much is known of their way of life but they were great warriors

Edit; I am amazed that I have been dumbed down with my answer! whereby the answer below just verifies what I have said,; Nobody knows there origins of th Mycenaeans; the Greek language is attributed to them and they were great warriors, because they took the Cretan kingdom and in fact they took Troy.

1. According to the archeologist Tsountas, the Mycenaeans were the first habitants of Greece and they did not come from another location. By studying the escavations at Fylakopi and Knossos it has been proved that there are several similarities between Mycenaean and Minoan+Cycladic civilization. Therefore the Mycenaeans probably have been influenced by the Cretan civilization and they always lived within the territory of what we call today Greece. (J.I.Manatt "The Mycenaean Age", 1987)

2. According to archeologists Blegen and Haley, the Mycenaeans have come from another location (which they have not specified) and they have been mixed with local habitants.(American journal of Archeology, 175 , 1928, p. 89)

However Mycenaeans have been nominated such due to the maggiority of important foundings discovered in Mycenae, a city located in Peloponesos (in the place of old city Argos).

According to Mycenaean texts which have been translated by Ventris and Chadwick it has been proved that the first habitants of what we call today Greece were speking the Greek language.

The type of life that Homer describes to his Iliad and Odyssia has been proved is based on the life at Mycenae. Several archeological foundings have proved facts described by Homer.

I think they were always there. The city of Argos conquered it around 500BC, and banished the residents from the city.
