I have had both a 1984 Honda GoldWing & a 1998 Harley Electra Glide (my current ride). They are both great touring bikes. The Honda is more difficult to work on and parts are expensive (example: fuel pump cost over $200....I went to PepBoys & bought a fuel pump for a car for about $20....it didn't look as good, but it did the job.) At about 15 years the Honda got difficult to find certain parts for, because Honda does not support anything over 10 years old.
I had about 70,000 miles on the Honda when sold. I currently have about 35,000 on the Harley. No problems with the Harley so far. Easier to work on, parts are cheaper and there are so many after market parts available going all the way back to 1903. In 2000 I toured the Harley factory in Milwalkee. They have a special department to produce any part for any Harley all the way back to 1903.
I have I have seen good and bad dealerships & service departments. For parts you can't beat the J&P Cycles. Great service & decent prices.
Bottom line: they are both great bikes, but for me the Harley edges out the Honda in most aspects.
Hope this helps.

Harleys are a lot better bike and get a lot more respect but...
Since you are talking about a touring bike that is going to put on many miles I would say buy a used Honda gold wing a year or 2 old. and pay a 3rd of the price and have a bike that will last for ever.
If you want an american bike with a good reputantion and decent price with modern technology, check out a Victory. American made and very powerful for a good price!!

Right on, big jerry61!
I ride both a Honda and a Harley myself. Not a 'Wing though.
Everyone I know that ever had a 'Wing loved them.
Of course, everyone I know on a Harley likes thiers too.
The Honda is set up like a tourer, complete with cupholder.
The Commutercycle.
Don't need a 'Wing, because it doesn't take much to get my narrow butt up to speed. (better mileage too)
The Harley is just plain fun. And faster! Much nicer looking, too.
Over 4000 miles on a seat I can't stand, but still fun.

I had a 79' Wing and now own a 04' Ultra Classic. I like the H.D. Better because of the way the motor is set up ( V Twin ) . On the Honda the motor stuck out too far on the sides making you spread you legs wider to get comfortable. Also if you have a long femur it makes it hard to shift because your legs are too far forward. I used to have to shift with my left heel. I liked the Wing, but I'll keep my Harley.

The wing is a better bike bike for reliability and comfort.
As for cool factor there is no question, like them or not, Harley wins, hands down.

Harley.
I've ridden both, and the gold wings, while good bikes, are just dull. They're comfortable, but just not fun to ride.
Harley. Definately Harley.
Motorcycles aren't about practicality, they're about feel and style. Harley's aren't just popular because of their style. They're actually quite good motorcycles these days.
