Where is the missing dollar (see details)?

Three friends get a hotel room together for one night which costs them $30. Later the desk clerk realizes he made a mistake and that the room should have only cost $25. He gives the bell-hop 5 one dollar bills and sends him to give it to the friends. On his way, the bell-hop decides he can pocket some extra money, so he takes 2 of the bills and keeps them. When he gets to the room, he gives each friend 1 dollar as their refund. So if they originally paid $30, that is $10 each, and they each got back $1, then they paid $9 each for the room. The bell-hop kept $2. 9X3=27. 27+2=29. Since the room originally cost $30, then where is the missing dollar?

There is no missing dollar.

You're throwing the $$ on both sides of the equation at the same time. There won't be $30 after the clerk refunds the $5, there is only $25 on each side. The $25 at the desk plus the $2 the bellhop kept is the $27 they friends actually paid ($30 less the $3 refund). The $1 they each were refunded gets subtracted off the $10 they each paid, so the $2 the bellhop kept would also be taken off the $27 net cost of the room, making the $25 the hotel rec'd.

There isn't a missing dollar, there are two, and they are in the bellhop's pocket.

Yes you are just reversing properties in mathematics that isn't really possible. Its like saying you have eleven fingers.

On one hand you count to five and the other you countbackward from ten and then add the two numbers together to get 11.
