For instance when I'm pretty positive someone is joking - others reply really seriously and maybe visa-versa. Different strokes for different folks I guess...

Exactly. You've got to have an open mind if you are asking open questions. You can't win on here, you get slated for being funny when you should have been serious and visa versa. I take it all with a pinch of salt. Some folk just have no sense of humour.

I'm an English teacher and a former sysop on a news forum, so I tend to have some sympathy for your point of view. Reading comprehension these days is terrible, and that's the chief reason (I think) for the different readings you're seeing. I've actually tested students who claim they understand each other's instant messages, and if there's any real content to the exchange, most participants will fail a quiz on what was said. People just think they're talking to each other, most of the time, but mostly they're talking to phantoms in their own minds.

Back when I was a sysop, I used to jump into the middle of "flame wars" between participants who were slugging it out. Frequently I'd have to inform each of them that they actually agreed with each other: Bob would misread Joe and start to go off on him, even though they believed the same thing. I tended to call these "friendly fire wars," and they were almost as common as actual conflict was.

Eventually I quit.

No, I don't think it is weird because we are all different, from different countries and cultures and as you said, "different strokes for different folks" really hits the mark, which is what makes Yahoo Answers such fun and so interesting.

Perception is a tricky thing!
Emotions are hard to communicate through writing!

But sometimes a joke is clearly a joke and some people just don't get it!!!

Yes, and it would be nice to actually get an answer to a question every once in a while too!

It's because all emphasis is lost when it a question is asked by means of text ... Especially when thereare no italics.
