My computer takes at least 5 mins. to go off when I go to the start menu and click "Turn off Computer". Can anyone tell me why? and also what I can do to turn off faster?

If you face long periods of time with the computer off, the YES, turn it off.

I agree with others here, I would suspect SpyWare. Open your Anti-virus program, get updates and run a full scan.

You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

Also, you do not need some of the Startup Programs. Go to RUN in the START MENU and type MSCONFIG. Go to the startup section and uncheck some of those programs. Leave your anti-virus checked. After restarting, check yor anti-virus to be sure that it is active.

When your computer shuts down, it must flush the hard drive write cache, and each running program and driver has it's own shut down code. Windows also saves some environment settings. The more drivers and programs you're running in the background, the longer it takes to shut down the computer. Some programs (like Norton Anti-virus) really add to the shut down time. There isn't much that you can do about cutting down the time.
If you're running a laptop, then just put the computer in hibernation by closing the lid.
It's alright to 'turn off' the computer that way.

Hi. Try using the task manager to see how many processes you have running. Task Manager can be accessed by either one time or right click on the task bar. If you have too many processes running at once you can control which ones start by running 'msconfig' from Start>Run.

This could indicate an infestation of spyware/malware. It could also indicate that you have so many processses running in the background at startup, that it is taking this long to shut them all down at shutdown. I have also seen this issue with orphaned processes left behind after a poorly written program is closed.

You probably have a lot of programs running in the background. If you look in your system tray/notification area (lower right hand corner) you will see tiny little icons. The more populated that area is, the longer it will take to shut down.

you probably have got a lot of programs running behind the scenes and they are saving info before shutting down, you probably need to clean out any programs that you don't need. go to "remove programs " and see a list of programs and select those that you don't use and delete them. could also be spyware and adware running. upgrade your virus protection and firewall..

Why do you turn it off?
Let it run.

It's actually better for it to run all the time.

The only time I shut mine down is:

A storm threatens or I go on vacation.

In either case I shut down and unplug EVERYTHING that connects me to the outside world.
