I like powder better. I put mine all the way up to the brow line. I only use like natural colors though or light pinks. like I put a darker shade only on my lid then the light color all the way up to my brow.

I use up to four different colors. If using four, I use the darkest to line my eyes. Of the remaining three shades, there's one that's really light, that I use as highlighter. There's a middle tone that I use for the base color on the lids. Then there's a slightly darker tone that I use for contouring. After lining my eyes, I use the middle tone just on the lid. The slightly darker color, I use in my crease, to add some depth. The lightest color, I use right below my brow bone and at the inner corners of my eyes.
This took some practice to get it down. Since I was never given any instructions on makeup when I was younger, it's been entirely trial and error. I'd sometimes look at the makeup on women in magazines and try to copy the look.

It really depends on what type of look you are going for. For a more natural look, use a neutral color (think brown sugar, cinnamon, caramel, honey, milk chocolate) range of browns all over the lid. If you want a more dramatic look, then take a shimmery lighter color (peach, apricot, champagne, gold) and apply under the brow bone.
For a smoky eye for day or night, the best eyeshadow kit (with full, easy instructions is from Mally beauty! You can get it on QVC or the QVC website. They are very reasonably priced and come in very flattering, universal colors. They also come with a eyeshadow base to keep eyeshadow in place all day, and a black eyeliner to define the eye!

I used to be a makeup artist for M.A.C so I know the BEST ways to do it. I'll give you the totally done up version and the everyday natural version.
Totally made up:
1. you need to put on a base- either concealer or a cream or a creamy stick eyeshadow
2. put a base color like 1 to 2 shades darker than your skin in the crease. This will give you depth
3. put a main color on the lid (crease to lash line) but don't go all the way in by your nose
4. put a color 1 to 2 shades lighter than your main color and preferably with a shimmer in the area on your lid by your nose.
5. blend your main and shimmer together
6. add a dark main by picking a color 2 shades darker than your main or just a dark color like charcol, black, or dark brown, on the outer corner of your crease.
7. blend the dark shade very well with the main color.
8. add a highlight above the dark main shade directly on your brow bone. this will make your eyes pop.
9.blend the highlight and the dark main shade.
10. you can now add liner if you want.
11. and do your mascara first because if you screw up and get it on your lid you want to do if before you do all of this work
12. BLEND BLEND BLEND
easy version
1. pick a colored base like a shadestick by M.A.C.. it will make the shadow stay on longer and has color and shimmer in it and it won't crease like cheaper stick and cream shadows.
2. take a lightly colored (1 to 2 shades darker than your skin) color and put it in the crease.
that's it. the colored base is your main color and you have a darker crease. it's so easy. you can add liner but i'd only do a very thin line if any at all
once you are comfortable with these you can vary and add more or less depending on what you want

I apply a plum color on the lid with a sponge applicator, chocolate brown in the crease with a brush and a light shimmery pink (highlighter) below the brow on the bone. I'm partial to creme eyeshadow(Revlon makes them in pen form) because it stays on. I just started using Almay powder shadow that is color coordinated for your eye color and like it a lot; it lasts all day.

3 colors, lt.peachy on lid, white under brow as highlighter & dk brown in crease & outside corner of eye. I also use liquid eyeliner (brown or black) for a more dramtic effect (Top lid usually). Black mascara as well.
I like the powder eyeshadows (Covergirl Shimmering Sands) but put them on using a brush.

I use three different colors and a highlighter (white) for right under the brow.
I use colors that bring out the colors of my eyes (brown or blue). I wear color contacts sometimes.
Blue eyes- wear a brown for the lid - darker blue for the crease and a light light blue at the brow bone. BLEND!
Brown eyes- For a playful look use a light/medium purple for the lid, dark brown for the crease and blend a light cream/brown color on the brow bone.
my eyes POP with those colors and no it doesn't look clowny or 80's. I blend and don't cake it on.

I have used many different methods of applying eyeshadow over the years....I wish i could remember all of them, because i've gotten a lil lazy over the years with it! About 3 yrs ago was the best though....you take black eyeshadow near the inner eye and take any other color you want and blend it in towards the outer eye, so it fades to a different color from black. It looks awesome. especially if its shimmery. also try and fade skin colors to white up to the brow bone. if this makes any sense

I usually use three... on for the lid, the outer or inner corner and one as a brow highlight (a really light color or the lightest color in a set compact, etc.) Using a good brush to blend is key! i tend to stay away from the 'darker color in the crease' concept as it can be a dramatic technique that can go wrong. good luck and experiment, experiment!

Its different for everyone. I normally only use one color but sometimes i will use two. I only have it on my lids. And i like the powder better. Although I have some gel but I mostly have the powder.
