Yes, this is true of cars that have been produced at least for the last five years. The car manufacturers claim that it is due to being able to analyze the data and make cars safer.
But I believe it is for use in court cases in severe accidents, among other things.

The automotive 'black boxes' only record a short loop of time for seeing what happened in the vehicle right before an accident and stop recording right after it detects an accident. They weren't put in place on a government order, it was more of a product-improvement move. Personally, I'm not sure how I feel about it; but if it were to automatically report anything to anybody, I'd be solidly against their use.

black boxes have been in some makes for years. It will however be a standard safety feature in 2009. Currently the information recorded can only be used at owners discretion. "For example if you had a crash and the air bag did not deploy, you can take the info from the black box and sue the car maker." This will probably change in the future, due to court precedings.
All in all, don't worry about the government watching you. Your not going to jail for doing everyday things. Worry if you're a CRIMINAL

It's your choice to buy that vehicle or not. Driving is not a guaranteed right. If you don't want something in your car that the company puts in their cars, don't buy that one. If you can't find one without it, ride the bus, or build your own car.
I don't particularly like the idea of having a "black box" in my car, but I know that I have other options if I really don't want it there.

That's BS. There are no black boxes in cars yet. Unless you are suspected terrorist - they might implant something into your vehicle.
