Anti Depressants.
Seriously if you are having trouble letting go then you may be suffering from depression.
FIRST try some self help. I have never had trouble letting go, my trouble was realizing that I didn't need a man to be happy. I did some serious self evaluation and decided that in order for me to be happy I need to improve myself. I went back to school.
Figure out what you need in order to be happy. I would be willing to bet that if you were honest you would realize that even during your relationship you were not totally happy. We first must be happy with ourselves before we can truly be happy with someone. Our mate should add to our life not be our life.
Maybe going back to school, or taking on a new hobby, or doing volunteer work, I don't know because I don't know you. But I'm sure if you think about it you will discover something.
What did you always want to be when you grew up? Did you achieve that goal? Maybe you could re-examine this dream and see if you can still make it happen. Or something similar.
Good Luck!

Don't let your past affect your future. I agree that letting go can be difficult at times, but make sure that you aren't holding on to the bad things. Hold on to the good things! Just tell yourself everyday when you wake up that you are going to do something good in order to reach those goals that you have( hope you have) set for yourself. In time you will find that you are moving on with your life and reaching your goals as well.

Ten years... that's an excuse for not trying new things or people or places. Its a comfortable rut that serves as an excuse for not living life and going out and taking chances. Ten years tells me you are getting some kind of satisfaction in seeing yourself as the person who clung to this for so long. Honestly, a good therapist is in order for you now that you realize ten years of your only life have been wasted.

Find a hobby you really love and emerse yourself in it -- and don't let it be focusing on the past! :)
It's hard to let go of the past because without it, we wouldn't be who we are today. However, lingering in the past for years upon years isn't good either. Can be very unhealthy!

It could be...in the right situation...
Ask yourself it you want to get over it...if you don't, then here comes another 10 or more years...
If you do want to...then depending on how willing you are...it could be a matter of minutes...months ...again years. But you would start on it now...
Remember...whatever it is...it is up to you what you focus on or not.

You cannot 'hold onto" the past--you can become immobilized about it. You may need to see what it is that is making you 'stuck' and work on that with a psychotherapist.

you can only hold on so long once you hit your breaking point then you will be able to let go but its something you have to do on your own.I think I have been waiting for someone to tell me all these years what I need to do but if your not happy now then you will never be,move on,the longer you wait the harder it will be.

You move on. Day after day it gets easier. If you've been holding on that long you may need someone professional to talk to.
